In Abia, an FRSC official allegedly stabs a driver to death.
A Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, official who has yet to be identified, allegedly stabbed to death a commercial bus driver in Abia State’s Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 16, at Umuikaa junction on the Port Harcourt – Aba – Enugu Expressway.
According to eyewitnesses, a disagreement between two FRSC officials and the bus driver resulted in a fight. In the midst of the chaos, one of the FRSC allegedly stabbed the driver on the back.
Doctors confirmed the driver’s death after FRSC officials transported him to Ronald Hospital in Mkpuka.
“The FRSC officers detained the bus driver. And the man parked his bus by the roadside with the inscription, Jesus is the rock. There was a disagreement, and they began exchanging words, resulting in a fight. Nobody knew why they were fighting, but we saw the bus driver rolling on the ground, covered in blood. People began to gather, and he was taken to the hospital by FRSC personnel. The man was stabbed in the back and died before being taken to the hospital “The witness recounted.
“Before the FRSC kills any more drivers, the government should demolish the checkpoint at Umuikaa junction. The FRSC has been extorting money from bus drivers by using small boys who hawk goods, which has caused problems. The same FRSC personnel were responsible for a security agent killing a driver at this Umuikaa intersection the previous time “The witness continued.
Mr. Paul Ugwu, Sector Commander, FRSC, Abia State, stated that he has yet to receive full details of the incident.
“We are still waiting for full details of the situation from our office in Umuikaa in order to better inform you, but we learned that a driver was stabbed at Umuikaa,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Iyke Anyatonwu, Chairman of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, has condemned the heinous murder of the bus driver.
Anyatonwu, through his media aide, Enyinnaya Standhope Nwaigwe, urged the FRSC’s State Sector Commander to conduct an immediate investigation and apprehend the perpetrators.
“The Executive Chairman, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area and State ALGON Chairman, Comrade Ike Anyatonwu, has strongly condemned the alleged stabbing to death of a motorist by some Officers and Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps operating at Umuikaa junction of Isiala Ngwa South LGA, along the Port Harcourt – Aba – Enugu Expressway,” according to the statement.
“Comrade Anyatonwu, who took his annual leave to visit Ronald Hospital, Mkpuka, where the victim was dumped in a pool of his blood by his alleged killers and was later confirmed dead by the Hospital Management, wondered why such heinous act has become a recurring incident at Umuikaa junction and called on the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps to immediately investigate the matter with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.”
“The State ALGON Chairman, while passing a vote of no confidence on the activities of various Security Agencies operating at Umuikaa junction along the Expressway, explained that their unlawful activities have defeated the purpose of bringing them to the area as they have turned their checkpoints into toll gates to the detriment of the people they are to protect, while calling on the youths to remain calm and avoid taking laws into their own hands.”
“He also promised that his government will help ensure that those involved in the incident are brought to justice, describing the alleged killing as one too many.”
